Tadanori Yokoo Psychedelic Posters

Bizarre, colourful, psychedellic, trippy, intense, complicated, simple, saturated, contemporary...nuff said!
The National Museum of Art, Osaka: The Complete Posters Exhibition http://www.nmao.go.jp/english/b3_exhi_beginning_yokoo.html

Tadanori Yokoo began producing posters while attending high school in his hometown of Nishiwaki. Then, following stints at the Kobe Shimbun newspaper, the National Advertising Research Center, and after moving to Tokyo in 1960, the Nippon Design Center, Yokoo joined the Japan Advertising Artists Club at the tender age of 22. In the mid-60s, through his relationships with Juro Kara and Shuji Terayama, Yokoo suddenly rose to prominence through works such as Koshi-maki Osen and La Marie Vison. At the same time, his illustrations for magazines such as Heibon Punch and Hanashi no Tokushu made him a darling of the media. Yokoo's posters, which while reflecting post-war Japanese society, have been burned into our brains as unforgettable memories of the era. They are also notable for the fact that rather than following foreign trends, they display a unique sense of Japanese graphic design. Yokoo's creative activities later expanding to include a wide range of fields such as painting and literature, but as he continued to produce posters throughout his career, the poster format functions as the core of his work as an artist.

Vintage Chinese 'Health for the People' Posters

Children's Health (Pictures 1-8) - Do Physical Exercise. Get the BCG Inoculation. Don’t Spit Anywhere. Love Cleanliness and Sanitation. "In the 20th century, under both Nationalist and Communist governments, China supported public health measures as a way to strengthen the country. The state promoted preventative health, and children were a particular concern for both the health and the education ministries. The children’s health material promoted exercise, vaccination, controlling spitting, keeping utensils clean, and honest behavior."

Family Planning (Pictures 9-14) - Beginning in the 1970s, China strongly promoted policies of limiting fertility, using the slogan "wan, xi, shao" – 晚 稀 少 – "later, longer, fewer."

Medical Advertisements (Pictures 16-19) - "The Tianjin Pharmaceutical Factory, founded in 1921, used western methods to produce and market traditional Chinese medicines. The sheets shown here advertise a mix of European and Asian products, using ideal feminine and masculine images as well as the Tian An Men (Gate of Heavenly Peace). Ads for progesterone and methyltestosterone show the appeal of potent over-the-counter hormone therapies."

The Four Pests (Pictures 20-21) - "Beginning in the 1950s, the Chinese state mounted the Patriotic Health Campaigns to improve sanitation and public health. In 1958 the campaigns focused on the "the four pests": rats, sparrows, flies and mosquitoes."

What to do about one's mistakes (Cycle through 12 consecutive frames) - This series of transparencies teaches children how to admit their mistakes and correct wrong behavior. An energetic little boy is playing with a ball and accidentally breaks a window. Classmates and their teacher think another child is the perpetrator, until the boy admits his mistake. An understanding between teacher and playmates contributes to a happy ending.

Graphic Artist Raymond Savignac | France 1907-2002

I've recently been introduced to the deceptively simple, optimistic and humorous work of the late Raymond Savignac, 1907-2002 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_Savignac - who started under the direction of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassandre -  fantastic free mark-making style, characters and compositions which were popular in the French advertising industry of the last century.

Here's a collection of the 'Trouville-Sur-Mer' posters on the Normandy coast of France where Sauvignac spent his later years. His style is evident everywhere in Trouville - branding the Hotels, Shops, Casino's and Beaches - there is a line up of his work all down the beach board-walk, the style really adds to the historic, laid-back seaside town and really puts it on the map.

A selection of work from Savignac's long career in advertising and graphic communication...

Trouville is sometimes overlooked due to being a stone's throw from Deauville http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deauville the popular vacation spot for Coco Chanel during her affair with Boy Capel. The two opened her second shop there, which was the first place Chanel took the step from hat making to clothing. Deauville was the birth place of Chanel's clothing career.
