D&AD New Blood & New Designers 2017

Went to see New Designers and D&AD New Blood shows yesterday - always great to see what the students are up to. Lots of politics, post-modern/memphis pattern design, clever use of materials & process for furniture and surface pattern design and as always the furniture design was amazing. Lots of eye-catching posters and graphics everywhere.

Digital Trend Forecast 2016: The Year of Consumer-Led Communications Marketing

"The digital trends with the most staying power all have one thing in common: focus on the consumer. Today’s consumers are more powerful than ever, and they are telling us what they want: implicitly through behavior and data—and explicitly through direct communication. Emerging technologies and opportunities enable brands to place consumers at the center of their marketing strategies like never before." Source: Edelman website

The Design Studio Method - or - how to supercharge your ideas process...

"The Design Studio method has become one of the most success methods in Agile and Lean UX. This rapid, iterative approach blends concept creation with critique. Design Studio is a great way to jumpstart your design process, create 300-400 design concepts in just a couple of hours, or get team buy-in and ownership." via Vimeo

Having recently participated in a hack day using this process, what struck me was how effective this is in getting dozens of ideas generated quickly - once you get over the 5 minute rule shock, you can actually get a lot down and democratise the design process as everyone is sketching, not just the one who is deemed 'good' at drawing.

Popular Lies about Graphic Design

"Ward pulls from his ten years of experience to tackle lighter subjects such as design fetishists, Helvetica’s neutrality and urgent briefs, alongside discussions on more worthy topics such as the validity of design education, the supposed death of print, client relationships and pitch planning. In addition, the book features contributions from more than a dozen established practitioners such as Milton Glaser, Stefan Sagmeister, Christoph Niemann and David Carson."

US Dollar Design by Travis Purrington

Beautiful work by Travis Purrington - his 2014 US Dollar Design proposal

"An updated banknote proposal created for the United States of America within the Master thesis design project "WORTH: The Aesthetics of Global Interest". Inspired by the Swiss Franc's ambitious redesign process (the currency is thoroughly redesigned every 20 years by way of contest) The goal was to develop a similar updated iconographic system better representing the advancements and culture within the American society. This particular series plays on themes of human discovery and endeavors to connect achievement, theory and the fundamental properties of life." From Travis Purrington's own website
